Treharris Male Voice Choir
The Choir originated from the Deep Navigation Colliery in the small town of Treharris within the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil, formerly Mid Glamorgan. Members of the choir were not solely from the Colliery or Treharris with membership open to all local men who wanted to join and had enthusiasm for singing.
Our present membership resides within the Treharris area including Bedlinog, Trelewis, Nelson, Edwardsville and Quakers yard whilst we also have members from Ystrad Mynach, Cardiff and Taffs Well. Over the decades the choir has sustained itself through many trials and tribulations but remains an active and exciting entity where members continue to enjoy the culture, the camaraderie and the concerts.
At present we are around 30 members but always on the look out for new singers to join our ranks. Our Musical Director, Llinos Davies BEM recently celebrated her 30th year as our leader of performance whilst our present accompanist Anna Bowden has been with us for over 20 years thereby providing continuity and a strong foundation. Choristers are mainly local men with a variety of backgrounds and experience but sadly none are any longer miners although many did work in the coal industry. This colourful bunch of people make up who and what we are and you can find out more about us as individuals on this site.
We perform a range of music from traditional hymnals and choir classics to more modern pieces such as songs from musicals or adapted pop culture songs. A range of venues and engagements throughout the year helps provide interest and variety and we do this. predominantly, for charitable purposes. The choir requires resources to maintain its existence and we manage this through member contributions and commercial engagements such as weddings or funerals (where feasible).
Some memorable performances for the choir include: Singing at the Pantheon in Rome in 2019, a fantastic and emotional experience. We have enjoyed travel abroad to sing in Choral festivals in Prague and Lake Garda in recent years which have proven to be outstanding trips for both our musical team and choristers with their partners. At home we have sung in Scotland, Ireland, England and of course, Wales. We maintain a number of local annual engagements such as our show case concert every Autumn and local concerts in clubs, churches or chapels and older peoples’ care homes at Christmas time. We aspire to build on this portfolio with new concert venues and engagements being sought constantly and we will be recording our next CD in the near future. A list of where we’ve performed can be found under our ‘History’ page on this site.
As a collection of people we enjoy socialising as much as any others. Throughout the year we organise evenings or days out purely for the members and their invited guests. These have ranged from ‘An evening with – sports personalities’ to brewery visits and days at the races. These events help us to bond and grow as a group which reflects in our sense of belonging and pride. Practice can be thirsty work too and most of us socialise in our smaller groups after practice.
The choir is very fortunate to receive the support of John Davies and Sons, Funeral Directors of Trelewis, who allow us free use of Salem Chapel in Nelson as a permanent practice venue. We meet there every Tuesday for practice between 7.00pm and 9.00pm.
