As you can see from this web site we are an established group with lots of history and tradition. We are constantly looking for new singers to join us and there are several benefits to being a member of the choir.

Firstly, you don’t have to be a great singer, many people are put off by a perception that you have to be able to sing and that a voice test awaits. This is simply NOT true. Potential members are invited to sit amongst us for a period and discover whether the choir appeals to them. They are welcomed and hopefully, made to feel at home. You will never be asked to sing on your own and your colleagues in the various sections of the choir are always keen to mentor and support newcomers. Enthusiasm for singing and a willingness to learn are all we ask for.

Your wellbeing will be improved through singing. If you don’t believe that then here are some research extracts to convince you;

“Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.”

Professor Graham Welch
Chair of Music Education at the institute of Educatin, University of London

A study by Goethe University and the Royal College of Music found that amateur group singing can improve the immune system and in particular the defence against respiratory disease and even cancer.

“Participants (of the research project) reaped the same positive benefits of social interaction and peer support offered through singing in groups, which helped to clinically improve their mental health conditions. Some of the benefits experienced by the participants included an increase in self-worth and self-confidence, a reduction in stress, an improvement in memory and concentration and a sense of inclusion.”

So if you’re looking for a healthy past time that doesn’t involve physical exertion or wearing a track suit then come along to Treharris Male Voice Choir and give it a try – you won’t be disappointed and you’ll no longer wonder what to do with yourself on those long winter nights when there’s nothing to do. You’ll feel better for it.

We practice every Tuesday and Thursday at Salem Chapel, High Street, Nelson from 7.00 pm until 9.00 pm.
